What does it mean to be masculine in today’s world?
Masculine energy is about PRESENCE, DIRECTION, and PROTECTION — being fully here, having a mission and standards, and being someone others can count on. It has NOTHING to do with dominance, aggression, or suppressing emotions. Real masculinity is being strong enough to be kind, decisive enough to lead, and secure enough not to need anyone's permission to be who you are.
Marni's answer
I'm Marni Kinrys, founder of The Wing Girl Method. And I need to say something because there's SO much noise on this topic right now. Real masculinity isn't what social media is telling you. And here's what it actually is, from a woman's perspective, in the year we're living in right now.
The confusion around masculinity
There are two loud voices online. One says masculinity is 'toxic' and you should be softer, more agreeable, more emotionally available. The other says masculinity is about dominance, aggression, and control.
Both are wrong. Women don't want a man who's collapsed his masculine energy to make her comfortable. And they REALLY don't want a man who's performing masculinity like an act.
What real masculinity actually is
1. Presence. Being fully HERE with the people in your life. Not distracted. Not on your phone. Not somewhere else in your head.
2. Direction. Having a mission that's bigger than any single woman. A purpose. A path. Something that gives your life meaning outside of relationships.
3. Protection. Not in a possessive way — in a 'I have your back' way. Making the people in your life feel safe because you're steady, reliable, and don't collapse under pressure.
4. Standards. Knowing what you'll accept and what you won't. Being willing to walk away from what doesn't work. Not settling.
5. Strength with softness. Being physically and emotionally strong enough that you can be kind without being weak. Big enough to be tender.
What women actually want from a masculine man
We want to feel like we can lean on you and you won't buckle. We want to feel like you have your own life and don't need us to complete you. We want to feel like you'll be steady when things get chaotic. We want to feel like you know what you want and you're not going to change with the wind.
That's it. That's masculinity. And when a woman feels that from a man — every part of her nervous system relaxes.
Common mistakes men make
- Performing dominance to look masculine (fake alpha behavior)
- Suppressing all emotions and calling it 'strength'
- Making one woman your whole mission
- Trying to be everything to everyone
- Chasing validation from other men or women to feel masculine
What to do instead
- Build a mission. Something that gets you up in the morning that has nothing to do with women.
- Take care of your body. Physical strength and health is the foundation of masculine presence.
- Practice being direct. Say what you mean. Ask for what you want. Stop hinting.
- Develop the ability to sit with discomfort — yours and hers — without needing to fix or flee.
- Have standards you actually enforce. Be willing to walk away from what doesn't work.
Marni's take
Here's what I want you to hear. The world needs more genuinely masculine men — not more performers, not more softened versions, not more chest-thumpers. Men who are grounded. Who have their own missions. Who protect what they care about. Who can be kind and strong at the same time. Who don't need anyone's permission to be who they are. That is what women want. That is what your kids need. That is what YOU need. And it starts with just showing up as YOU — fully, without apology.

- It's NOT about dominance, aggression, or suppressing emotions.
